Evangelion / Ranma ½ : Past/Future Chapter Twelve Created by Long Ngo Started February 27, 1999 Finished March 25, 1999
Kaji was caught in a dilemma. Today was his sparring session with the young Saotome, Fifth Child and pilot of the giant black Evangelion Unit 04. *Should I tell Ranma about Rei?* Kaji thought. Since meeting the enigma known as Saotome Ranma, he had grown to like the kid. He and Ranma had so much in common. Both were cocky and arrogant beyond what would be considered normal and took pride in their own abilities. They were also carefree and enjoyed life to its fullest. Had a stranger watched how they acted around each other, he/she might think the two to be siblings or even father and son.
*Not yet. Not until Ranma feels better. I don't want to push the kid over the edge. I just hope I finish the day without too many bruises.* For the past two weeks, Kaji had been on the receiving end of a depressed and angry young man who knew more about martial arts than Kaji's pride would allow him to admit.
*Sarge has nothing compared to Ranma,* Kaji mused, thinking about his drill sergeant during his Special Forces training.
Looking up at the clock and seeing that it was almost time, Kaji started to stretch. He just finished when his sparring partner arrived. *I can't believe how arrogant I was when Ritsuko asked me to spar with her ward,* Kaji remembered the moment well. It was hard to forget. He had never been embarrassed like that in ages and never by anyone so young.
---
"Moshi moshi!" Kaji said, having picked up the telephone.
"Kaji?" a female voiced asked.
"Yep. You've just reached the home of Ryoji Kaji, the handsome and lover extraordinaire. How may I help you?" Kaji spoke with a fake French accent.
"Stop joking around, Kaji, or would you like me to tell Misato that you've been cheating on her?"
"Okay, okay. So how may I help you , Ritsuko?"
"Have you heard about my new roommate?" she asked.
"Yep. From what I hear, he is supposed to be quite handsome too, not in my league though."
"Stop that, Kaji. He's only fourteen."
"Never knew you were into men that young, Ritsuko-chan."
"Ryoji Kaji!" Ritsuko shouted, using his full name.
"Gomen," Kaji apologized.
"I can tell you're still smiling over there, Kaji. Anyways, Ranma is into martial arts and I was wondering if you might spar with him and maybe teach him a thing or two?"
"Sure, bring him over tomorrow. I have nothing planned."
"Arigatou, Kaji."
"No problem."
---
"Earth to Kaji!" Ranma said, waving his hand in front of Kaji.
Blinking, "Sorry, Ranma. Just remembering the past," Kaji explained.
"Better be careful. That's the first sign of old age," Ranma joked.
"Hey!" Kaji exclaimed. Searching the face of the boy in front of him, he was surprised to find only determination and a little of the carefree attitude that had been lacking days before. Ranma was not depressed anymore. *Maybe I should tell him.*
-----
"So someone had tried to stop my plans for erasing the Fifth Child from Rei's memories. That did little but delayed the inevitable. My dreams have just been postponed for the time being, not derailed," Gendou muttered to himself, looking at the computer monitoring Rei's progress. Typing in a few commands, Gendou smiled, the screen reading, 'Process resumed. 5% completed.'
"Soon you will walk the Earth once again," Gendou spoke.
Staying for a few moments longer to monitor Rei's process, Gendou turned around and left.
-----
"You are getting old," Ranma teased, connecting with a sidekick. Watching Kaji stumble a bit, he just had to smile. *Rei would never have wanted me to be so depressed,* he thought.
Rubbing his a side bit to get the sting out, Kaji launched a quick high low combination, hoping to get one good shot in. He ended the sequence with a leg sweep but completely missed as Ranma flipped backwards with a flair. "I was never that young!" Kaji exclaimed, looking at Ranma jumping up and down filled with energy. *Where does he get all that energy?*
Seeing the sweep coming, Ranma flipped backwards. When his hands touched the stone floor, he pushed off, propelling himself into the air. Twisting his body three times before executing another flip in midair to right himself, Ranma landed into a kempo battle stance. "Maybe you're too tired from all those late night sessions with Misato. I know how she can wear a person out," Ranma teased.
"What?"
"Temper, temper. I mean look at me. Handsome, funny, great body and the stamina of a wild horse."
"Ranma!" Kaji managed to growl.
"Just kidding," Ranma said, putting both hands up. "No need to get angry."
"For that I'm going to beat you senseless."
"You can try, Oyaji."
"Hahaha. Funny. You also forgot to add cocky, overconfidence, and immature to your list of traits."
-----
Ritsuko was nervous. She was called to Commander Ikari's office. *How did he find out? Maya would never betray me. Maybe he doesn't know and just want a progress report,* she thought hopefully.
"Enter."
Taking a deep breath, she slowly walked inside and came face to face with the Commander of NERV. "You called, commander?"
"Yes. I have a question for you."
The brief silence before the question felt like an eternity to Ritsuko.
"The question pertains to Rei III. Did you at any time visit her since the death of the Second?"
"No," Ritsuko answered, overjoyed that the commander had not suspected anything concerning the recent energy spike or her involvement in its deletion.
"Who, besides you and the sub-commander, know the location to the chamber?"
"No one that I know of. Why?"
"That is all. You are dismissed."
Exiting, Ritsuko let out a huge sigh of relief.
"She is hiding something, yet she doesn't know anything about Rei III's progress. Interesting." Gendou muttered.
-----
"That was a great workout," Ranma exclaimed.
"For you maybe," Kaji stated, "But not for an old timer like me. Arggg! that hurts."
"Hahaha!" Ranma laughed.
"It's not funny. I bruise easily. No, scratch that. I bruise easily only around you."
"I should tell Misato that. She might get jealous."
"You do and I'll carry out that threat of killing you slowly and painfully."
"Only if you can catch me," Ranma said.
"All joking aside. I like to talk to you about something." as Kaji spoke, all humor left his voice.
"Nani?" Ranma was caught off guard by the sudden change of atmosphere.
"It's about Rei."
At the mention of Rei, the girl he loved but had not been able to save, Ranma fell into a silent state, waiting to hear what Kaji had to say. "Yes?"
"Ranma, I'm not sure how to say this but Rei . . . Rei was a genetically engineered clone." Kaji finally answered, glad that he did not have to keep the secret from a boy he considered a friend.
"I already know. She told me about a month before she was killed." Ranma spoke, surprising Kaji.
Taking a deep breath, "Did you know there are more than one Rei?"
"Yes. She said that there was one other before her. Why are you telling me this now?" Ranma asked.
"Because I would like to think that you and I are friends," Kaji said. Taking a deep breath, "What I am about to tell you is to stay between us, okay?"
Ranma nodded his head.
"The commander does not have one or two clones of Rei but over two or three dozen." Kaji explained quietly, "I followed him to the chamber where he was hiding this experiment of his. I'm not sure what his plans are but there is a possibility that Rei might return. That is the good news. The bad news is that what I found there also convinced me that the commander has a god complex. Before, I thought that he just loved to be in control but to have the ability to create life as he sees fit is just a bit unsettling. Here is the worse news I think, for you that is. He was erasing you from Rei's memories."
Ranma was speechless. *Why didn't I think of it sooner. If Rei was a clone then there's a chance that I can have my Rei back." Ranma thought hopefully before his mind processed the last part. "WHAT! What did you say?"
"Calm down, Ranma. I stopped it before it got too far."
"That bastard, Ikar . . .," Ranma stopped, shaking his head, "He doesn't deserve that name. That bastard, Robunguki, will pay for that. No one but no one hurts those I love!" Ranma growled.
Kaji was prepared for an enraged Ranma but was shocked when he heard the commander's real name. *How did Ranma know that? Not many people even realize that the commander took his wife's family name for himself.*
-----
Across town, a very beautiful red head woke up. At first, Asuka did not know where she was. Blinking a few times to get the sleep out of her eyes, her arm touched something soft and warm. It took a few more moments for her to realize that it was a hand she had brushed. Turning her head to the left, the face of one Ikari Shinji came into view. The first reaction was puzzlement then anger and finally a happy smile as she remembered last night.
---
Shinji was sitting next to the one person everyone in school said was his girlfriend. At first, he had denied the facts fiercely. Looking at Asuka now, he smiled. *We have gotten closer. I wonder what she thinks?*
"I don't know what you see in Ranma. I mean he's cocky, arrogant . . ." Asuka spoke.
*You and Ranma are so alike,* Shinji thought, after hearing Asuka complain about the many faults of Ranma. "What do you think about what everyone at school are saying about us?" Shinji asked, deciding to throw caution to the wind. *Don't want to lose you like Ranma lost Rei.*
"Huh? What are you talking about, baka?" Asuka asked, part of her was confused as to what Shinji wanted and another part knew all too well.
"School. Me. You. Couple."
Staring at Shinji, *He's changed. I might like this new one better than the old.* "You don't think I would kiss just anyone, do you?"
"Well, there was Kaji and . . ."
"And?"
"And you are really . . . huh beautiful and you did live in Germany and . . ."
Smiling, Asuka leaned over to Shinji. "You were the first to introduce this pilot to the wonders of France. I must say, what I have experienced, I kind of liked and would enjoy it if you shut up and kiss me." she whispered in Shinji's ear.
---
Seeing that Shinji was still asleep, Asuka leaned down and gently kissed him. Getting up slowly, Asuka left Shinji's room and headed to the bathroom. Moments later, Asuka returned with a bucket of cold water. Grinning, she emptied the content of the bucket onto the sleeping pilot, instantly waking him up.
"COLD!" Shinji shouted.
"Shinji, go cook me something. I'm hungry!" Asuka whined, although she could not get the smile off her face.
-----
Walking up to a security guard, Ranma asked politely, "Where may I find Commander Ikari's office?" *Just you wait, Robunguki.*
"Who are you and do you have clearance for this information?" the man asked Ranma.
"Here," Ranma said, handing him his Nerv ID.
"You're one of the pilots?" the guard asked.
"Hai. I have something important to discuss with the commander concerning one of the other pilots. I'm also in a hurry."
"I have to call this in first," he explained.
"Look, give me the directions to his office. I have no gun and what can a kid like me do to someone like the commander?" Ranma tried to persuade the guard.
"Sorry. Only following procedures."
"Fine, call it in," Ranma sighed. *Looks like the hard way. Why couldn't I have asked Kaji or Ritsuko?* Ranma thought. Tapping the guard on the shoulder.
"Yes?"
"GIVE ME THE DIRECTIONS!" Ranma spoke each word slowly. Grabbing the man's uniform and dragging his face down so that they were face to face, "NOW!" Ranma finished.
"Thirteen floor down, first double doors," the guard answered. It was not that he was scared of the fourteen year old kid, it was the fact the kid's eyes glowed that made him answer.
Taking a couple of minutes to calm down and to make sure the kid was nowhere near him, the guard took the radio attached to his belt off and called the incident in.
-----
"What did he want?" Gendou asked.
"I see."
"No. I will handle this myself."
"I want a squad on alert and ready to intercept the Fifth Child at a moment's notice."
"Make it so."
Gendou hung up the phone. Turning on one of the monitors, Gendou folded his hands on top of his desk and waited for Saotome's arrival. *I did not expect him to visit me so soon. What has changed?*
Seeing the Fifth Child approach the closed double doors, Gendou leaned a bit forward. *What are you up to?* Gendou thought, after he realized that Ranma was not going to inform him about his presence.
The instant that Ranma started to glow, Gendou reached under his desk and pushed a hidden button, signaling the guards to start moving in. *Now, it's only a matter of time. I wonder if my doors can handle that kind of power,* he mused, remembering the tape of Ranma's battle with the gang of thugs.
-----
*To knock or not to knock?" Ranma thought, standing outside the office of the Supreme Commander of Nerv.
He then thought of Rei and what the man had done to her and his own son, he decided. *Not!*
Closing his eyes, Ranma cupped his hands and concentrated. *Time to see my new technique in action.*
A green aura surrounded Ranma as seconds passed. Soon the energy around Ranma started to flow into his cupped hands, forming a ball of energy. For about five seconds this lasted until the aura around Ranma disappeared. As Ranma concentrated some more, energy from around Ranma started to leak into the ball as well. Focusing, Ranma forced the sphere of energy to become smaller, more compact. Sweat was forming on his forehead. *A bit much,* Ranma thought. He willed the sphere to expend, *This should be just right.* Stretching his senses, Ranma found Gendou right in front of him, about 10 yards away. Taking aim a little to the right, Ranma shouted, "Hiryuu Sairui Tenteki!!!"
The ball of energy shot through both doors like a hot knife to butter, passed Commander Ikari's head by a few inches, burning a few strands of hair, went through the wall behind the commander with the same ease as it did the double doors and through a few more walls before weakening and dissipating. If someone had examined the two doors and walls beyond, they would have guessed that a very powerful blow torch was used to melt materials that was designed to withstand plastic explosive.
"What is the meaning of this?" Gendou demanded. Though he was angry, Gendou had kept his face devoid of emotions. *How was he able to do produce something that powerful?* he thought.
"Konbanwa, Robunguki. Just wanted to ask you a few questions and I thought this was the quickest way to get your attention," Ranma said with a smirk.
"How dare you!"
"Do I have your attention?" Ranma asked.
"You have ten seconds to explain what just happened or I shall place you in the brig and have you shot for treason," Gendou continued, not backing down.
Looking pass the commander at the hole in the wall. "A bit much don't you think?" Ranma asked, ignoring Gendou's demand.
-----
"Sempai!" Maya shouted urgently.
"What is it?" Ritsuko asked, rushing over.
"I've detected an energy spike."
"Angel?"
"No, it's more like the one that was detected three days ago."
*No, Ranma. Why are you making my job so much harder?* Ritsuko thought. "Location?"
"That's the problem, Sempai. It's under Nerv Central. Tracking now."
"Well?" Ritsuko asked after seeing Maya go a little white.
"It's right next to Commander's Ikari's office."
*No, no, no!!! This is not happening,* Ritsuko was frantic. *How could he have learned about the clones. That is the only reason for him to be doing this. Has to be.* "Where is Captain Katsuragi?" she asked. Ritsuko had a very hard time keeping a calm exterior.
"She's still at home."
"Call security and sub-commander Kozo. I'm heading down there right now."
"Sempai?" Maya called after Ritsuko but was ignored. The door closing after the fleeing scientist. Maya did not have the chance to inform the fleeing scientist that there was already a squad of security guards on their way to the Commander's office
-----
"Return Rei to me!" Ranma demanded.
Looking at Ranma in the eyes behind his pair of shades, "Why should I?"
Holding up his left hand, Ranma shot a ball of ki passed Gendou's head, scorching the other side of his head and creating another hole behind Gendou. "Any more questions?"
"You are finished. I will have you tried for treason and then executed."
"You and what army?" Ranma asked.
"The one behind you," Gendou answered.
Turning around, Ranma saw two dozen guards pointing their rifles at him. Turning back to Gendou, he also noticed the gun the man now carried.
"Surrender or die by firing squad."
"If they miss, they'll kill you," Ranma advised the Commander.
"They will not miss," Gendou simply stated.
"They will not touch me. The only ones who can are not present," Ranma replied calmly.
Cocking the chamber, Gendou lifted the gun to Ranma's head. "So be it," Gendou spoke, pulling the trigger. The large, mostly barren office rang with the loud, sharp sound of a discharged gun.
Tilting his head to the left, the bullet passed harmlessly by.
"Told you," Ranma taunted, before remembering something and looked behind him once again. On the ground was one of the guards that was hit by the bullet, "You bastard!" he shouted at Gendou.
"It seems you might be right. I don't think I can hit you but perhaps they can. Then again, they might not. Who are you, Saotome?" Gendou asked.
"Give me Rei and I'll tell you."
"Rei is mine. She shall never belong to you."
"Not if I have anything to do about it."
-----
Ritsuko Ran as fast as possible, trying to reach the Commander's office. She hoped that she would arrive on time to stop Ranma from doing anything stupid. Reaching the elevator, *Why is this elevator going so slow?* she thought.
-----
From a place high above the Earth, Arael approached. *Soon, Adam. We shall be joined, you and I,* it promised itself and the entity known as Adam.
Hour by hour, Arael crept closer to the blue marble. *This world filled with hate shall be reawakened and I shall be the instrument of the third coming. First Dinosaurs, then humans and now it is time for my children.
"Tabris! I shall be the one to control the Earth's destiny. I shall be its God!" he shouted, flaring a blinding white light.
-----
Looking up into the sky, "A star may either exist, to help billions strive or die and extinguish that speck of light," a boy with brown hair and red eyes spoke. "You, Arael, shall not be the not the next Eve."
-----
At the same time, Maya was startled from her daydream by the red light on her console. Quickly analyzing the energy pattern, it came up blue. "This is not good. None of the pilots are here," Maya muttered. Moments later, red alert was signaled throughout the base and civilians were rushed to shelters.
To be continued
Author Notes:
I had to cut this chapter short. The next installment will include the battle with Azrel and the reason behind Ranma's appearance.
The main reason is that I like cliffhangers ^_^
One of my Pre readers blame me for finishing most of my fics on cliff hangers.
Hiryuu Sairui Tenteki = Flying Dragon Tear Drop (hopefully) Konnichiwa = Good Afternoon Konbanwa = Good Evening Moshi Moshi = used to answer the phone, very similar to hello
Any other Nihongo that I did not define for you that you find in one of my stories please email me and I will be glad to sending you the meaning.
C&C are welcome as well as flames as long as it has a valid point. Anything that you might think is OCC please email me. I am bias towards certain characters but wish that it was not so ^_^.
